McGuinty Government Preparing Students For Future Success Ontario students continue to prove why they are internationally recognized among the best in the world. Results released today from the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) show that 69 per cent of Grade 3 and 6 students are mastering the reading, writing and math skills that will lead to success in high school, postsecondary education, training and the workforce. This represents a 15 percentage point increase since 2003. Since 2003 the Province has helped students succeed by reducing class sizes, increasing supports for teachers and launching the full-day kindergarten program. In addition, 400 new schools have been built. These initiatives are helping Ontario students succeed, with more students graduating high school today than ever before. Investing in education infrastructure while providing students with the tools they need to succeed is part of the McGuinty government's plan to ensure Ontario has the skilled workforce needed to compete in the global economy. QUICK FACTS The OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment ranked Ontario students among the top 10 readers in the world. The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) is an arm's-length agency of the provincial government that has administered provincial assessments annually since 1996. An EQAO survey found that over 90 per cent of principals use EQAO results to communicate with teachers about student achievement and to guide school improvement initiatives.
