McGuinty Government Encourages Families To Learn, Read Together Ontario is marking Family Literacy Day by encouraging parents and children to make reading a part of everyday life. Family Literacy Day is a great time for families to explore new ways of learning, and reading together. For example: ?Read and talk about your child's favourite books. Tell family stories about yourself, your child's grandparents and other friends or relatives. ?Try a new recipe for dinner. Ask your child to read the directions and help measure ingredients. ?Play a board game as a family. Find one that involves reading instructions on cards and counting. ?Invite your child to plot a trip on a map or learn about the history of a destination. ?Pull out your arts and crafts supplies and create a collage of words and images from magazines and newspapers. Giving children a strong start in school is part of the McGuinty government's plan to support student success while securing a brighter future for all Ontarians. QUICK FACTS Family Literacy Day is organized by ABC Life Literacy Canada and celebrated annually. This year's theme is Take the Learning Journey. Across Ontario, there are 155 Parenting and Family Literacy Centres to help children get a great start on their learning and build a stronger foundation for parent involvement. Sixty-nine per cent of Grade 3 and 6 students are achieving at or above the provincial standard in reading, writing and math, an increase of 15 percentage points since 2003. Full-day kindergarten is currently offered in about 800 schools in Ontario and will be available for all children in publicly funded elementary schools by September 2014.
